Linda Dogan: Feeds the Community

"Feeds the Community," "Roots for the Underdog," "Spends time in the hospital at the side of underprivileged children." Did these descriptions bring to mind duties for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) consultant? If not, perhaps you've never met Linda C. Dogan, 24-year Spartanburg County employee, 13-year Spartanburg City Council member and lifetime community service worker.

Dogan, a Spartanburg native, is known for her hard work both inside and outside of the office. In her job as a GIS consultant, she draws maps for the County. She affects change for the community on the Spartanburg City Council. She is also involved with several hospitality boards, committees and organizations, including a lifetime membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. When she's not attending services at Christian Missionary in Fellowship Church, she enjoys spending time with her siblings, nieces and nephews. However, Dogan is best known for her efforts in the community.

Her pet project, known as "Feed the Community," assists in providing meals for soup kitchens during the holidays. Recently, Dogan was able to overcome a major challenge faced during Thanksgiving 2006, when the usual corporate sponsor was unable to provide the food to feed the homeless. In her self-described way of being "caring, relentless and not accepting 'no' for an answer," Dogan sprang into action and went through the phone book to call on other sponsors to help make the holiday a positive experience for the hundreds of people who depended upon Feed the Community.

"I don't just call on people, I also help out," says Dogan. "It is better to be a blessing than to be blessed."

Dogan hopes that in 2007, African-Americans are able to see the value in this statement. Additionally, she wants to make sure that Blacks get what they deserve. This will include realizing that it is okay to focus more on themselves, which is a goal for Dogan as well in the upcoming year. As for being called an "Unsung Hero" for 2007, Dogan believes that she is simply doing what is right. When she sees someone with a need, she will do what is necessary to help. If she were to put her life to the tune of a song, she said simply, "May the Works I've Done Speak for Me." For Dogan, making a difference keeps her on the job, even though the maps she often draws are blue prints of future success for citizens in her community.
