Willis Lee: Helpful, Dependable and Dedicated

With 28 years of recreation work already behind him, it seems that Willis Lee has no plans of leaving the game anytime soon. In fact Lee, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Anderson, is part of a steering committee that looks at the community as a whole and pictures how they want the area to look by the year 2020. With this initiative, the Anderson 2020 Vision Plan, he influences development of the youth and recreation indicators.

It should also come as no surprise that Lee, a native of Anderson County, is also involved with the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Advisory Council and the Anderson Chamber of Commerce. Young at heart, he simply enjoys working with youth.

A devoted husband and father of three children, his goal for 2007 is to expand recreation activities for African-American youth and adults. In doing this, he wants to reduce obesity, a growing epidemic particularly for African-Americans in the 21st century. He hopes to impact this through the Anderson Area Shrinkdown, which kicked off shortly after the New Year.

Lee works consistently to cater to youth and adults though wellness programs. In his position, he ensures facilities are affordable and accessible for Anderson County residents. This is done by taking extra measures, even going as far as providing scholarships for youth to be able to participate in activities.

After a lifetime of work in recreation, Lee can see a correlation between how an increase in activities and outlets for youth will curb violence and crime. This is something he strongly believes in and is therefore concerned with the cutback on physical activity opportunities for youth. His hope is that more decision-makers may share the same view and give more funds to support recreation.

In the meanwhile Lee, a "helpful, dependable and dedicated" citizen, will continue to transform the City of Anderson into an active, healthy place to live, one lap at a time.
