Destined To Help
After watching a baby try to eat through a package of frozen food from sheer hunger, she vowed to make sure no one who asked would ever go hungry again. For this reason and more, we are proud to recognize Ollie Allgood as one of our 2008 Upstate Black History Makers. Ollie opened the doors of Destiny Food Bank Ministries, a non-denominational and non-profit ministry, in November 2002. Located in Seneca, South Carolina, it serves needy families in Oconee County and throughout the surrounding areas. Their motto is simple: "If I Can Help Somebody, Then My Living Will Not Be In Vain."
In the six years that the doors at Destiny have been open, Ollie has never turned anyone away who was hungry even if it meant emptying out her own kitchen cupboards and wallet. The purpose of Destiny Food Bank Ministries is to reach the unreached, to love the unloved, and to provide for both the spiritual and physical needs of whoever is willing to accept it; regardless of race, creed or denomination. With this in mind, Ollie recently started another ministry, Destined for Better Health.
Destined for Better Health was started to address the need of many of their female clients and staff who struggled with their weight and other resulting health problems. DHEC is partnering with them to provide a health educator that will assist clients with nutritional information and support. Ollie hopes to be able to expand this new ministry to the children and men in their program as well, as funding becomes available.
Ollie is a proud member Mt. Zion FBH Church under the leadership of Pastor Anthony Durham. For her efforts to help the needy in her community, 107.3 JAMZ is proud to salute Ollie Allgood as a 2008 Upstate Black History Maker.
