Megan Mitchell Hoefer: Promoting Education

Megan Dawn Mitchell Hoefer gets up to care for 300-plus children each day. As principal at Summit Drive Elementary she has the responsibility to oversee the process in which young minds are molded.

Hoefer, married in June 2006, is now entering her 8th year in education administration and she admits she is still learning.

As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Greenville County United Way Board, she volunteers on committees to further promote education.

Pulling out her grade book, she assigns the economic condition for African-Americans in Greenville County a B-minus, maintaining a positive outlook in all situations.

"I feel as though there has been a lot of work put in place ... good support systems. We could use stronger African-American leaders at local and state levels to help us grow. There is still room for growth," says Hoefer.

The commitment to education has led her to her current studies toward a Doctorate degree in Education. Hoefer admits she has a love for children and believes that working with children is her calling. For the sake of a child's growth and development, she will wear any hat necessary to get the job done. She attributes all of her success to her faith in God.

"I would like to take what I learn to a higher level and see more improvement in instruction techniques that would help all children," she says of her goals for the future. Always following up a point with positive reinforcement, she adds that, regardless, children are still on target now more than ever. It seems that the same can be said for Hoefer.
