Upstate Black History Maker Fred Gibbs Recognized February 16, 2008
Financing the Future

He took his football scholarship and did more than just run with the ball, he ran with the educational opportunity. And that continues to bring him success long after the game was over. That's why we're proud to recognize Fred Gibbs as one of our 2008 Upstate Black History Makers.

Fred was born in Seneca, SC. He attended Wofford College on a football scholarship and took advantage of that to earn himself a BA in Business Economics in 1987.

After leaving school, Fred took a banking position with C& S Bank in Spartanburg. Fred found he had a talent for finance, and found himself rising the ladder into management, relocating to Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC as different positions were offered to him. He was able to return to the Upstate in 1995 to serve as Director of Business and Corporate Giving at his alma mater, Wofford College.

Soon after First South Bank was formed, Fred became their Vice President and Commercial Banking Group Director. Once again, he found himself rising within the ladder of senior management and soon was President of First South Financial Services from 2000.

Secure in his financial knowledge and experience, in March 2005 Fred launched his own firm: Banc Capital and Financial Services. What began as a $3.5 million start-up in 2005 has since grown in to a $48 million business.

Fred currently serves as Chairman of the City of Spartanburg Investment Oversight Committee, Business Carolina, Inc. board member, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce board member, a Board of Trustee member at Wofford College and past President of the Wofford College National Alumni Association.

Mr. Gibbs also serves as treasurer and trustee for the Mary Black Foundation and a trustee with The Spartanburg Regional Foundation. He also has served on the boards of the Charles Lea Center, the Spartanburg Boys Home, the Spartanburg YMCA, and the South Carolina Young Bankers Association.

Fred is married to Tamara D. Gibbs. He is currently completing his final year as a Liberty Fellow (Class of 2008).

Fred was recently recognized by the Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce as Minority Business Person of the Year. The City of Spartanburg recently recognized Banc Capital as the 2008 recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for Humanitarian Excellence.

From football to finance, 107.3 JAMZ is proud to salute Fred Gibbs as a 2008 Upstate Black History Maker.
