| Upstate Black History Maker Rev. Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy Recognized February 19, 2007 Rev. Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy: Assisting and Empowering African-Americans though Spiritual, Educational and Social Outreach Rev. Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy, a native of Holly Springs, SC, believes that "good people working together" make all the difference. For the past 31 years, he has served as senior pastor for the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC. In this capacity he assists and empowers African-Americans though spiritual, educational and social outreach. Snoddy attended Florence Chapel High School in Spartanburg County. He went on to study at Claflin College in Orangeburg, SC and then the Morehouse School of Religion in Atlanta, GA. He was inducted into the Claflin University Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Preachers' Hall of Fame in 2006. Recently, he received an appointment from South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford to serve a second term as a member of the South Carolina State Technical System's Board of Directors. He is also the first vice president of the Baptist Education and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, the moderator of the Spartanburg County Baptist Association and on the board of directors for Camp White Pines. His personal efforts surface through Mount Moriah's numerous ministries including the Men of God ministry, which is composed of a group of men who recruit church members. Also, there are the Boys to Men ministry, the Girl Scouts, missionary groups and the tutorial ministry. The tutorial ministry consists of Greenlight, which is a group that focuses on assisting youth with homework and problem areas in school. It includes access to a tutorial hotline in case they may need immediate assistance. Snoddy is also proud of the Mount Moriah Basketball League, which includes an integration of white and black church members in the area. He feels that the key to become stronger is to always push for change. He also believes it is important that the community support and be a part of the church, as the church has been a long-standing central point of strength for African-American families for hundreds of years. This is why he has been in the ministry since 1965. "It (the church) is the one thing we still have control over," says Snoddy. "We are seeing the results of the lack of attendance in churches," he adds. In his pastoral role, Snoddy often preaches for more initiatives to help support and maintain families. He says that the church is a viable force and the lack of African-American families is becoming a detrimental trend in society. One of his ministries, known as FLAME, interacts with husbands and wives to teach how to nurture families and marriages. Rev. Snoddy is married to first lady, Mrs. Sheila L. Snoddy. In addition to helping his community, he enjoys playing tennis, Frisbee, walking, watching good movies and eating good popcorn. |
