Computing Community Solutions
She keeps our Upstate children safe and in school while educating their parents on the dangers that face them. We're proud to recognize Lisa Lopez as one of our 2008 Upstate Black History Makers.Lisa used to hate computers. As a girl growing up in Batesburg, South Carolina, working with computers was not what Lisa had in mind. But when she joined the Army, Lisa found herself working on some of the most sophisticated and immense computer systems in the country. As an Army Captain, Lisa travelled throughout the country and abroad, and was responsible for some of the nation's largest military databases.
Lisa is now the Computer Applications Coordinator for Spartanburg Community College, and is responsible for overseeing 30 different computer courses. In addition, she runs her own small business, Southern Presentations, a professional photo slide show business that was featured in Essence Magazine (May 2007). Lisa was also selected to participate in Leadership Spartanburg through the Chamber of Commerce.
In addition, Lisa is an active volunteer in the community and has received awards from Habitat for Humanity among others. This past August, Lisa gave a free seminar called Internet 101 for Parents, which was featured by WSPA and the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. Lisa's seminar educated parents about MySpace and other basic information they needed to be more aware of their children's exposure on the internet and what to look for.
Currently, Lisa, as a member of the Junior Patron Society, is focusing on Glenn Springs Academy (formerly Spartanburg Home for Boys). GSA provides a place for 32 Upstate boys, especially those who have turned 18 and have been released from the DSS system prior to graduating from high school. By giving these boys a place to stay, they are able to complete their high school education or GED and reduce the drop-out rate among our Upstate children.
Lisa received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from South Carolina State, and her MBA from Webster University. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Lisa attends the Redemption World Outreach Center church in Greenville. She and her husband Steven have two sons, Will and Justin.
For providing safer places for our children, both in our community and on the internet, 107.3 JAMZ is proud to salute Lisa Lopez as a 2008 Upstate Black History Maker.
