JAMZ Celebrates Black History Month
Upstate Black History Maker Priscilla Ketter Recognized February 22, 2008
A Drive For Life

Her own personal tragedy motivated her to get others the life blood they need. That's why we're proud to recognize Priscilla Ketter as one of our 2008 Upstate Black History Makers.

Priscilla was born in Greenville and attended Eastside High School. In school, she never really liked science, but when she reached college, they taught it differently and she realized she loved it. She received her BA in Biology from Morris College. Little did Priscilla know how much biology would affect her life. Priscilla gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Precious Gamble. Precious was born with sickle cell disease.

Because of the numerous transfusions her treatments required, Precious needed an exact blood match, not just a blood type match. For Precious, her best chance at an exact blood match came from African American donors. But Priscilla soon learned that only 10% of average blood donors were African American.

Priscilla remembers well the time her daughter had to wait four days for a blood transfusion because a matching blood donor wasn't available. Each donation helped prolong Precious' life, and Priscilla realized that if this was type of delay was happening to her daughter, it was happening for other minority families as well.

When Precious passed away on February 21, 2004, Priscilla stated that her daughter's obituary would not be the last time people would see her daughter's name. Priscilla established the Precious Gamble Memorial Blood Drive, held every July around Precious' birthday. This year will commemorate the fifth year the drive has been held.

Priscilla's efforts to "diversify the blood supply" with more minority blood donors did not just end with the blood drive. Her passion led her to a position full time at The Blood Connection. In addition, Priscilla works closely with the Iron Disorder Institute and the Sickle Cell Foundation.

Priscilla is a proud member of Community Mission Baptist Church. She is also an active volunteer with her local PTA. She and her husband Greg live in Greenville with their children Terrell, Kiana and Nyla. She is thankful for the support of her mother Frascilla and brothers, Orlando and JJ. For educating and motivating Upstate residents and others to diversify the blood supply, 107.3 JAMZ is proud to salute Priscilla Ketter as a 2008 Upstate Black History Maker.
