Burger King Spongebob Commercial

MIX-A-LOT'S 'SQUAREBUTT' AD UNDER FIRE: New Burger King spot promoting kids meals criticized by children's group.

April 15, 2009

Sir Mix-A-Lot

*A children's advocacy group is going after Burger King and rapper Sir-Mix-A-Lot for their new hip hop commercial featuring a spoof of Nickelodeon character SpongeBob Squarepants - who is renamed SpongeBob SquareButt.

In the 30-second clip, Mix-A-Lot reinterprets his original hit song "Baby Got Back" with new lyrics that start "I like square butts and I cannot lie." Dancing to the new version is Burger King's mascot, The King, complete with scantily-clad background dancers with square butts. [Scroll down to watch clip.]

More than 2,600 members of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood have written to Nickelodeon and Burger King in the past 48 hours, complaining about the commercial, which promotes Burger King's Kids Meals.

"Parents deserve to know whether Nickelodeon--the most popular children's television network--signed off on the use of SpongeBob in a commercial that celebrates lechery and objectifies women," CCFC director Dr. Susan Linn told AllHipHop.com in an emailed statement.

The spot ran during Monday Night's Men's NCAA Championship and has aired on several other stations since. Burger King has stated that the ad was aimed at adults when it originally debuted on the West Coast at 6 p.m. during the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

In their letter, CCFC acknowledged that Burger King was after publicity, but questioned the decisions of Nickelodeon's top brass.

"We wonder why a children's television station like Nickelodeon would want to link one of its most popular and profitable characters to this sort of lechery and objectification of women," the CCFC letter reads. "That's why we are asking if you approved the use of SpongeBob in this commercial (and the longer Internet viral video, which is frankly even more disturbing)."

I was so shock when i saw this commercial! I had to check the time and channel. I didn't think this was a real commercial when i saw it the first time i saw it. And everytime i see it i still can't believe it. I don't think it's appropriate at all!
  • Spongebob BK Commercial
Give me a break. Its all in fun. I have 2 children 13yo and 5yo and when we saw it we busted out laughing. I thought it was really cute.It made me remember being a teen when Sir Mix Alot came out. Get real people there are far worse things your kids could see than dancers w/ phonebooks in there pants. Worry about something else w/ meaning.
  • b.k. commercial
like you, at first I was a little disturbed at the thought of this commercial, but then I thought about it.

Kids were first exposed to this song years ago when it was on the Shrek sound track. Donkey sang it to Dragon and nobody seemed to care that every four year old was chanting "I like big butts" we all thought it was cute. Also a lot of parents don't seem to think watching MTV or BET countdowns with there kids in the room is a bad thing, so why should we be suprized that in a world where children are forced to grow up at the speed of light we see a music video style commercial aimed at children. Perhaps it's the use of grown women that has people up in arms. But the use of children would have been worse. Maybe annimated female sea creatures would have been a little less disturbing and tied in with the sponge bob theme a little better.

I don't think that the commercial should be shown.
  • out of control!!!
This will definitely make me think twice before patronizing any Burger King restaurant. This commercial is in very poor taste and should be pulled from the air. My children do watch Sponge Bob and I would have trouble explaining this version of him to them.
